One World Films (Marc du Pontavice) and Federation Entertainment (Pascal Breton and Lionel Uzan) are announcing the development of an international series based on the iconic figure of Joan of Arc.
Currently in development, the series is co-scripted by the writer-director Alix de Maistre (Pour un Fils), and the writer and historian Xavier Kawa-Topor, former Director of the European Center of Art and Medieval Civilization in Conques. The pair first teamed in 2002 for the film La Peste, co-written by Alix de Maistre, and for which Xavier Kawa Topor acted as historical consultant.
Joan of Arc is the story of the passion of a young country girl who grew up in a land at war, and of Charles, a prince in exile, son of a mad king and a queen whose reputation had been dragged through the mud. Enflamed by her childish imagination and her devotion to the reclusive young monarch, Joan is convinced that Charles is key to bringing peace to the land, and that he represents the sole hope for the French crown. Armed with a fierce determination, Joan goes to see Charles and puts the craziest dreams into his head. He, whose weakness is to believe he can do nothing; she, whose strength is to believe she can do anything.
Joan progressively breaches the authority of her father, the princes, and the church. Her quest for the absolute would become a quest for liberty.
The series will take a fresh look at one of the great enigmas of history: The extraordinary trajectory of a young girl who broke all the rules of her time to fulfill her ideal – at the cost of her life.
The Joan of Arc project marks a fresh departure into drama series for Marc du Pontavice, who is a key figure in kids’ programming in France and on the international market. His expertise extends well beyond animation. He began his career producing international drama series, notably the hit show Highlander. He has also produced several successful theatrical movies, including Gainsbourg, A Heroic Life by Joann Sfar (2010) and War of the Buttons by Yann Samuell (2011).
Federation Entertainment will handle international sales on the series.
